CF Tico Cornejo Scholarship
Thank you so much to all of you who have helped us surpass our initial goal! Your generosity will not only provide crucial support to UM student athletes for many years to come, but will also serve to honour Tico’s memory and legacy.
Although we’ve now surpassed our initial goal, you can still make your gift in honour of Tico. The more we raise, the more support we’ll be able to provide our Bison athletes.
Sincerely,
Karen, Julia and Paulo
The late Eduardo ‘Tico’ Cornejo was a man of many talents. A gifted musician (guitar and zampolla), runner – and later coach – and wine expert / entrepreneur, he left a permanent mark on countless individuals through his enduring passion and love for life.
Tico was part of UM’s coaching staff for roughly ten years. He was well known for his enthusiasm and support of all athletes in pursuit of their goals and aspirations. He cared about the athlete as a whole person, fostering a holistic and supportive environment. In 2000, he earned Coach of the Year honours from Athletics Manitoba, and in 2002, the women’s team, primarily coached by Tico, finished second at CIS Cross-Country Championships.
In memory of Tico, the Cornejo family (his wife Karen and their children Julia and Paulo) have established the Tico Cornejo Scholarship and will match all donations to the Tico Cornejo Scholarship up to $25,000. This scholarship will be given annually to a female middle-distance runner, either as an incoming or returning student. The purpose of the fund is to reward the achievements of Bisons Track and Field athletes who identify as female and who best exemplify the positive attributes that Tico Cornejo brought to the Bisons.
“Thank you for generously in supporting this scholarship fund. As a former student athlete, I know first hand how much it means to be recognized and supported while balancing athletics and education. Your support means so much to us and we know that Tico is smiling. As Tico would say… ‘How good is that!’ “- Karen Cornejo
