Brock Wright Endowment

Project Story

“The first and most important choice a leader makes is the choice to serve, without which one’s capacity to lead is severely limited.”  – Robert K. Greenleaf

Dr. Brock Wright’s understanding of the importance of service being integral to successful leadership is a philosophy that he has applied throughout his distinguished career. This commitment has inspired his friends and colleagues to establish the University of Manitoba Dr. Brock Wright Endowment Fund.

Dr. Wright has had an illustrious career as a physician and senior administrator, and is a highly respected and values driven visionary leader who always aspired to serve. Committed to community medicine focused on the health of the population, he was able to navigate difficult conversations as well as achieve consensus among multiple stakeholders with varying agendas. He strongly believes that when multi-disciplinary health care providers and community work together, greater achievements can be reached. He is kind, humble and self-deprecating   and blessed with a wonderful sense of humour. As a colleague and leader, he comprehends the needs of others, is passionate and hard working, and committed to building a provincial health care system that enriches the lives of individuals and communities.

The Endowment Fund will provide a scholarship for a student in his or her final year of education at the Max Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. The student will have demonstrated service and leadership through a commitment to improving health services for Manitobans by:

• Enhancing collaboration among care providers to create a more integrated and effective provincial health care system; or

• Advancing inter-professional education or practice to ensure health care providers across the province are better able to work to their full scopes of practice; or

• Improving the cost-effectiveness of health service delivery so that resources can be directed to those services that best meet the health needs of Manitobans; or

• Increasing access to care for structurally disadvantaged populations to reduce the inequities that exist in health service provision.

In addition, successful scholarship applicants will have demonstrated qualities of integrity, empathy, and emotional intelligence. They will be excellent communicators, and be motivated by and committed to the success of the team.

Dr. Wright graduated in medicine from the University of Manitoba in 1984. Upon graduation, he joined the University of Manitoba’s Northern Medical Unit (now Ongomiizwin Health Services) and worked with patients in both Norway House Cree Nation and Hodgson.
In 1986, Dr. Wright returned to Winnipeg and started residency training in Internal Medicine. He then shifted his residency to the then emerging field of Community Medicine, which focused on population and public health.

He also completed a Masters of Business Administration, positioning him well in his role as the Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for the Health Sciences Centre, which he assumed in 1997.  From 2000 to 2017, he served as Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for the new Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and, for five years during that period, also served as the Chief Operating Officer at HSC.

Dr. Wright’s career has been punctuated by a number of firsts:

• Championed a new approach to total quality management at the HSC that focused on cutting across organizational silos through the establishment of a Program Management model.

• A founding Chair of the Provincial Medical Leadership Council who with his Chief Medical Officer colleagues from other health regions, brought together clinicians from across the province to identify how clinical services could be better aligned and patient care improved.  This effort laid the ground work for the establishment of a new provincial approach to planning health care services in the province.

• Served as the inaugural Chief Executive Officer of the newly established provincial health authority, Shared Health

• Oversaw the development of Manitoba’s first provincial clinical and preventive services plan

As a professional who is motivated to improve the health care system through influence, collaboration, mentorship and innovation, it is Dr. Wright’s hope that this fund will assist students in the field of medicine to become inspired leaders where service and leadership are the pillars of their career.
