Honouring the Life and Legacy of Dr. James “Jim” Duncan House, PhD (1966–2024)
We are deeply saddened to share that Dr. James “Jim” Duncan House, a beloved professor, researcher, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 10th, 2024, at the age of 57. Jim’s contributions to academia, especially in the fields of food and human nutritional sciences and sustainable protein, were immense. He served as the Head of the Department of Food & Human Nutritional Sciences at the University of Manitoba, and most recently, as the Manitoba Strategic Research Chair in Sustainable Protein. Jim also led as the President of the Canadian Nutrition Society, leaving a profound mark on the nutrition science community in Canada.
Jim’s brilliance as a scientist was only matched by his warmth as a person. His infectious laughter, sense of humor, and genuine love for music and art made him a joy to be around. For decades, he was a proud member of The Bison Men’s Chorus, sharing his voice in performances that ranged from the lighthearted to the deeply moving.
Jim’s passing leaves an incredible void in the hearts of his family, friends, colleagues, and students. He was a dedicated husband to Aileen, and a loving father to Meara. His friends and family, spread across the world, share in the grief of losing such a wonderful soul, but we are all comforted by the memories of his love, kindness, and brilliance.
Help Us Honour Jim’s Legacy
In Jim’s memory, in partnership with the Canadian Nutrition Society, we are raising funds to establish The Dr. James D. House Memorial Award at the University of Manitoba. This award will support students pursuing studies in fields that Jim was so passionate about, ensuring that his legacy of nurturing the next generation of scientific leaders will continue.
Your donation, no matter the size, will help carry forward Jim’s legacy in the academic community and beyond. Together, we can celebrate his life and ensure that future students will benefit from the generosity, dedication, and spirit of Dr. James House.
Thank you for helping us honour Jim’s life and ensure his impact continues to inspire future generations.
