A Scholarship Honouring the Legacy of Darius Maharaj Hunter
“We can’t all do great things, but we can do little things with great love.” – Mother Theresa
This quote, a favourite of Darius’ and evident throughout his life, was particularly apparent in his budding legal career and relationships with classmates, colleagues, and the law itself.
A recent graduate of the University of Manitoba Faculty of Law, Darius was passionate about the legal system and its capacity to effect positive change. He also believed that a legal education goes hand in hand with public service and good government, and that these pursuits provide an avenue to build community and improve the lives of others. In a 2018 interview with the University of Manitoba, Darius professed that “Whether as a lawyer, judge, or in a political position, I hope to inspire or create change in wherever my path in life takes me.”
Darius’ passion for the law, love of education, and unwavering desire to help others has inspired his family, friends, and colleagues to establish a scholarship at the University of Manitoba in his name, with the aim of providing financial assistance to students in their first, second, and final year of study at Robson Hall who have demonstrated a commitment to the legal profession, leadership and public service, and community-mindedness.
At the young age of 25, Darius had already accomplished many of his goals on the path to pursuing his dreams. He graduated from the University of Manitoba as a Dean’s List student in 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Studies and a minor in Religion. He then graduated with a Juris Doctor from Robson Hall in 2021, where he was awarded a distinction in research excellence.
During his legal studies, Darius served on the Manitoba Law Students’ Association, sat on the Board of Governors of the University of Manitoba, studied at Oxford University on an exchange program, conducted research for Professors, competed in the Solomon Greenberg and Jessup moots, and — inspired by his grandfather — organized Movember fundraising each year.
With a keen analytical mind and persuasive oratory skills, Darius’ promising legal career began as a student assistant with Manitoba Justice, a summer student with Marr Finlayson Pollock LLP, and finally, as an articling student with Phillips Aiello LLP.
Outside of law, Darius was proud to have served as the University of Manitoba Students’ Union Chief Returning Officer after a previous role as an UMSU Councillor. He was active in other areas of student life as well; he was a Senior Fellow for the Canadian Jewish Political Affairs Committee, a participant of the Canadian Institute for Jewish Affairs’ Israel Young Leaders Program, an ambassador for the Parliament of World Religions, and an Emerson Fellow with Stand With Us.
In addition to his professional career, Darius had many other passions and interests. Spirituality was central to his life, and he was thankful to have had the opportunity to found the Hindu Students’ Council at the university and take part in a religious pilgrimage to India. Darius also enjoyed travelling with friends and family, his yoga and meditative practices, playing intramural sports with friends, and coaching Tae Kwon Do as a second-degree black belt.
Darius will be lovingly remembered — and missed dearly — for these wonderful qualities and more. He was a husband, son, brother, and friend. He touched many lives and was a constant source of joy and inspiration for those around him. Through the establishment of this scholarship, his loved ones honour the person he was and the legacy he leaves.
