Majengo Clinic: Protecting Health, Dignity, and Hope in Nairobi’s Pumwani Community
In the heart of the Pumwani slum in Nairobi, Kenya, the Majengo Clinic has been a lifeline for thousands of women for more than 40 years. Established in 1984 by the late Dr. Frank Plummer of the University of Manitoba and the late Prof Elizabeth Ngugi of the University of Nairobi, the clinic began as a small but courageous effort to support female sex workers who were facing a devastating burden of sexually transmitted infections.
What began as a local response to a health crisis soon grew into a centre of globally significant scientific discovery. The Majengo Clinic has played a pivotal role in groundbreaking HIV and STI prevention research, with more than 3,200 women currently enrolled in studies. Today, over 5,000 sex workers rely on the clinic for essential HIV prevention, treatment, and primary health services, care they often cannot find anywhere else.
A legacy of compassion and connection
In November 2019, Jude Zieske, an administrator with the University of Manitoba’s Department of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, visited the Majengo Clinic and saw first-hand both the impact of the clinic and the urgent need for repairs to its aging infrastructure. She began a grassroots fundraising effort to help restore the facility.
Just two months later, in January 2020, Dr. Frank Plummer returned to Nairobi and experienced profound joy reconnecting with the women he had first met more than three decades earlier. Tragically, in February 2020, Dr. Plummer passed away. In honour of his life’s work and his deep bond with the Majengo community, his family requested that donations in his memory support the revitalization of the Majengo Clinic.
Thanks to donor compassion, the Majengo Clinic’s first crowdfunding campaign raised more than $27,000 helping to repair the aging facility.
A new funding crisis
The recent withdrawal of funding from the United States has created an urgent gap in life-saving supplies that women rely on through the Majengo Clinic’s prevention and outreach programs. Without these essential resources, thousands of women are at immediate risk.

Your donation will ensure the Sex Workers Outreach Program continues uninterrupted by providing the clinic with essential clinical and prevention supplies, such as condoms, lubricants, HIV and STI test kits, medications, gloves, disinfectants, and basic wound-care materials.
