Rose Scholarship

The Rose Scholarship Endowment, created in 2016 by Dr. Minna Rose Chung and Kenton Fast [BSc/91, LLB/95] at the University of Manitoba, was established to support cellists and double bassists in Performance Concentration at the Desautels Faculty of Music.
These foundational instruments are essential to every ensemble, yet students specializing in cello and double bass often face unique challenges – from the high cost of quality instruments to limited access to specialized training. The Rose Scholarship was created to help remove these barriers and empower the next generation of cellists and bassists to thrive.
Thanks to the generosity of donors, just over $100,000 has already been raised to support this vision. With your help, we can grow this fund even further and expand its impact.
Your gift to the Rose Scholarship is more than financial support—it’s an investment in talent, dreams, and the universal language of music. With your help, we can support more gifted musicians every year, assisting with tuition, instrument costs, and travel for performances, and more.
Through this investment, you are:
🎻 Elevating talent: Your support gives cello and double bass students the chance to study with world-class educators and access state-of-the-art facilities. With the right tools and mentorship, they can unlock their full potential and transform their passion into a lifelong career.
🎻 Expanding opportunities: Right now, the Rose Scholarship helps one student per year. Our vision is bigger. With your generosity, we can grow the fund to reach even more young musicians, helping them overcome financial barriers and seize new opportunities.
🎻 Shaping a global future: Music connects us beyond borders. By supporting the Rose Scholarship, you’re empowering students to share their talents, inspire others, and contribute to a richer, more vibrant global arts community.
The Rose Scholarship is more than an award—it’s a launchpad for the dreams of young musicians. When you give, you become part of their story, their success, and their future.
“The Rose Scholarship truly changed my life. Coming from Brazil, I dreamed of taking the next step in my music career, and the University of Manitoba offered the perfect environment to grow. But without the Rose Scholarship, pursuing my master’s wouldn’t have been possible.
Thanks to that support, I was able to fully embrace my studies, build meaningful connections and grow as an artist. Today, I’m a doctoral candidate at McGill University, preparing to release an album with my duo, and serving on the board of the Agassiz Chamber Music Festival.
The Rose Scholarship isn’t just financial help, it’s a foundation for the future of so many young musicians. I’m deeply grateful to Dr. Chung for creating it. I hope many others will join in supporting this initiative so it can continue changing lives, just like it did mine!” Luis Almeida (MMus/23)
“I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to The Rose Scholarship Endowment for their generous support of my Master’s Degree in Cello Performance. This scholarship has not only lightened the financial burden of graduate studies but has also given me the opportunity to focus more fully on my growth as a musician. Your support means the world to me—it has allowed me to continue refining my craft, deepening my artistic expression, and pursuing the next steps of my musical journey with purpose and passion.
Your investment in my education affirms the importance of music and the arts, and I am deeply honored to receive your generosity. I am committed to making the most of this opportunity and hope to carry forward the spirit of this support by giving back through music in meaningful ways.” Déverson Sousa Correia (Current recipient of Rose Scholarship, 2024-25. Brazilian cello student)
