Zak Hirshman Men’s Basketball Scholarship

The Zak Hirshman (March 28, 1971 – October 11, 2022) memorial scholarship will be awarded to an incoming Bison basketball player that displays the attributes of leadership, team play, attitude, and community involvement, that Zak did while playing for the University of Manitoba Bisons.
Zak was a talented and dedicated basketball player and gave his entire self to his team and the program, all while being a student athlete. Zak excelled in athletics in high school at Sheldon Williams Collegiate in Regina from 1985 to 1989. He was a city-wide all-star in both football as a wide receiver, and in basketball as a high scoring skilled forward.
In the fall of 1989, he was recruited and arrived in Winnipeg to play basketball for the University of Manitoba Bisons, to further pursue his passion. Zak played in five seasons with the Bisons and was an integral part of some very strong, nationally ranked teams in the early 1990’s. His work ethic, leadership and positive attitude engaged his teammates who grew into lifelong friends.
Zak was larger than life and his personality was inspiring and charismatic,
because when you knew Zak, you
wanted to be around him, and he became your friend. One of the first things you noticed about him was his big smile, then his sense of humour, laugh and sincerity. Zak was also an amazing Dad to his two children, Georgia, 13, and Jacob, 11, an incredible husband to Joanne, as well as a friend and relationship builder in life, business, and anything he set forth to accomplish in the community.
Zak passed away suddenly in October 2022, and his family and friends know that nothing prepares one for the loss of someone so special and beloved. This scholarship is a way of honouring Zak Hirshman’s memory in perpetuity, and we know Zak would love and be so pleased that someone who loves basketball, as he did, can benefit from a scholarship.
